A Note from Boat Angel Outreach Center:

California has a coastline that stretches from Oregon in the north to Baja Mexico in the south along the coast there are thousands of unused sitting in Harbors and marinas. Inland Lake Tahoe is a popular boating Lake in the North and Lake Elsinore in the south. Many people boat in the Sacramento Delta and the San Francisco Bay is one of largest in the USA. It is not unusual for families to lose interest in boating and water sports after several years. Sometimes the interest is lost because children grow up and move away other times the interest is lost because the expense of maintaining the boat combined with the insurance and registration fees becomes a bit too much for some to handle. Lots of people move on to other passions, golf, travelling and some people just move to another state unwilling or unable to transport their boat with them.

Boat Angel has been serving donors up and down the coast and throughout the state of California for many years. We have processed donation boats in the Long Beach Harbor, Newport Harbor, and inland as well.

Many donors read about us in the paper, on the internet or see our advertising at the marinas, they call us with pretty standard questions:

Click the question to read the answers!
  1. Does the boat have to work?

No, the boat does not have to work. The engine can be non working and we can process the donation, if the boat is in the marina the process will involve the boat being towed to either a launch ramp or travel lift. If the non-running boat is on a trailer the trailer and the boat will be moved.

  2. Do I need to have a title or registration?

Yes, you need to own the boat you are donating, if you have inherited the boat and not changed the title, you can still donate with some additional information, we are happy to assist you by phone. If you own the boat as part of a partnership or marriage in most cases both people will have to be willing to make the donation.

  3. How long does the process take?

Normally about 12 days from when we received all the information back.

  4. Is there any cost to me?

In general no, if you boat is in a slip you will be expected to keep the slip current during the process but you will not have to pay for towing, haul out or transfer expenses.

  5. Do I get a tax deduction?

Yes form 1098c allows some donors to take a Fair Market Value other donor can claim the actual charity selling price. There is a minimum granted to donors for older low value boats. The trailer is considered a seperate vehicle and entitled to it's own donation receipt.
